Used vs Loved

Which is your thought/choice between the following 2 sentences?
1. Things are to be used and people are to be loved; or
2. People are used and things are loved...

For me? Things are to be used, but People are to be loved ... Be
yourself....This is the only day we HAVE.

Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
